1970 | Joint concert with St. Faiths Darby and Joan Choir at the Woodville Halls as part of the first Gravesend Arts Council Festival. | ||
02/1970 | From the Band's Annual Statement Statement of Accounts to March 31st, 1969: The band was called "Gravesend Borough Band" and practiced at The Chantry, Commercial Place. The Musical Director was Mr. W.C.Goodwin B.E.M. The Bands repertoire was increasing with up to date music arranged for Brass and Reed Bands under the direction of Mr Goodwin for the 9th year. The playing strength of the band was still a problem and new members would be welcomed. Woodwind learners classes were still running with Vera Bennett. Albert Card, the Brass tutor, had been in hospital but was recovering. Michael Potter has graduated from the Learners' Class to playing with the Band. The band ran their eighteenth season of concerts at the Clarendon Royal Hotel in the winter months under the heading of "Bandtime". Thanks to the Managing Proprietor Clarendon Royal Hotel and guest singers The Co-operative Choir, and Evelyn Johnson with her accompanist Mrs. Pemberton. The Band took part in the first Gravesend Arts Council festival at the Woodville Halls in a joint concert with Gravesend Light Orchestra, and considered it a great honour to play in such a fine hall. The band also attended Mayor's Sunday, played for the Remembrance Day Service, and carried out engagements in the Fort Gardens. David Phyall, who used to play Clarinet in the Band, is now a Band Sergeant in the Royal Scots Greys. 1969 was a year of mixed fortunes for the Band, 10 instruments were stolen from the bandroom and only 4 recovered, although insurance covered the loss. The "Chantry" was declared as structurally unsound, and the Council endeavoured to find the Band a new headquarters. |
